Coronado Playhouse 70th Anniversary Season begins with Inaugural Community Concert Series: GODSPELL

Coronado Playhouse is the longest running community theatre in San Diego County. The 2016 season marks 70 years of entertainment, service and outreach to Coronado and area audiences.

The season launches with the offering of a new community concert series format. Godspell, the 1971 Off Broadway hit with music by Stephen Schwartz and book by John Michael Tebelak, will be presented with limited staging and a power house of some of San Diego’s top singers. Audiences will experience this classic musical featuring familiar songs with new arrangements and a blend of styles from pop to vaudeville. Godspell tells the story of Jesus’ life through musical parables. This concert version production includes universal messages of kindness, tolerance and love available to all spiritual and non-spiritual beliefs.

The cast features several Coronado Playhouse veteran performers including Joel Miller (Jesus), Rob Johnston (Judas) and Jennie Gray Connard, Daryl Daley, Debbie David, Anthony Donovan, Galvan, Ferril Gardner, Edgar Diaz-Gutierrez, Shirley Johnston, Tiffany Loui, Patrick Mayuyu, Will Schneider and Danielle Van Orden. Jennie Gray Connard is director of the production with Musical Director Kirk Valles leading The Godspell Band. This in-concert version has a complete rundown of the show’s songs including “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord”, “Day by Day”, “Learn Your Lessons Well” and “Light of the World”.

Cast Bios

Daryl DaleyDaryl Daley (Ensemble): Daryl is happy to be back on the CPH stage for the premiere of their concert series. Last season Daryl was seen as Alice in Millie, Turtle in A Year With Frog & Toad and Girl Bear/Nicky’s Left Arm in Avenue Q. Other appearances at CPH include Mary Sunshine in Chicago (2014), Princess Beauty in Sleeping Beauty or the Famous Rose Taboo (2014) and ensemble roles in Spamalot (2014), TBLWIT (2012) and The Drowsy Chaperone (2011).


Debbie DavidDebbie David (Ensemble): Recent credits include Patsy Cline in “Always, Patsy Cline” (Onstage Playhouse), the Lady of the Lake in “Spamalot” (CPH), and Dolly Tate in “Annie Get Your Gun” (SDMT). She is excited and grateful for the opportunity to perform this remarkable piece alongside so many of her favorite people (both on and off the stage!). Be kind to one another and rock on!


EdgarEdgar Diaz-Gutierrez (Ensemble): Edgar is excited to be working on Godspell with Coronado Playhouse as his fourth show here! His credits include being featured in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Princeton in Avenue Q, and Spike in Vanya, Sonya, Masha, and Spike. He is thankful for all those who have supported them over the years and his Two #1 Fans, his Mother and Grandmother!


ANTHONYDONOVAN (1)Anthony Donovan (Ensemble): Godspell is Anthony’s Coronado Playhouse debut! Stage credits include A Civil War Christmas (Diversionary), Into the Woods (Pickwick Players), A Boy and a Girl (Broadway Theatre), Five Course Love (Scripps Ranch Theatre), Encore Vocal Ensemble.  Small screen: Telly Award-winning writer/producer for his sketch comedy show THE HOUSE. Big screen:  Eternity: The Movie Geek Sex.  Big thanks to The Usual Suspects, Jennie, Kirk & this amazing cast. Dedicated to my #1 fan, Mom.


GalvanGalvan (Ensemble): Galvan is a multitalented actor, singer, musician and writer. He most recently played multiple instruments in the band for Avenue Q at Coronado Playhouse, assisted in the creative process for Lube the Musical, appeared in several shows in San Diego theaters including Next to Normal, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Pageant and many others. Galvan loves to share his love for the arts through theater, song and dance


FerrilFerril Gardner (Ensemble): Ferril is thrilled to be back on stage at Coronado Playhouse after last appearing in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” as Ms. Flannery. Other past credits include Lucy in “Avenue Q” with Coronado Playhouse and Ronnette in “Little Shop of Horrors” with Pickwick Players.  Thank you for coming out to support live theatre!


RobRob Johnston (Judas): Rob has performed extensively over the last 4 decades in theatre, film & bands but he won’t bore you with a list here. He is honored to perform for you this evening, sharing the stage with his wife, best friend & teammate in life, Shirley. ShirleyJohnston-nameShirley Johnston (Ensemble): Shirley is happy to be sharing the stage with talented friends. She’s been a singer, dancer, actor, stage manager, choreographer and director all over San Diego and New York City. Most recent roles: the Witch in Moonlight Stage Productions “Big Fish,” and Artistic Director of her own Musical Theatre Training Company, Break A Leg Productions. Currently she teaches dance at Culture Shock Dance Center. Shirley wishes to thank Jennie, the cast and crew of Godspell, especially her husband Robert. “We Can Build a Beautiful City”


TiffanyTiffany Loui (Ensemble): Tiffany is honored to join this superbly talented cast and is ready to rock out on the deedlesShe was most recently seen at CPH as Christmas Eve in Avenue Q. Other productions have included The Hunchback of Notre Dame (choral ensemble, La Jolla Playhouse), The Drowsy Chaperone (CPH), 42nd Street (CPH), Lippa’s The Wild Party (CPH), Footloose (SDMT) andFlower Drum Song (SDAART/La Jolla Playhouse). Many thanks to Jennie and Kirk for this wonderful opportunity to sing about lamps and love.


JoelJoel Miller (Jesus): Joel was last seen at Coronado Playhouse as Nicky in its award-winning production of Avenue Q. Other San Diego theatre credits include; Violet at the San Diego Repertory Theatre (ensemble, u/s Monty). Next to Normal at the Ocean Beach Playhouse (Dan). Up next, Joel will be playing the part of Bruce in The Normal Heart at Ion Theatre (November 2016). Joel is excited and honored to return to CPH to portray such an inspiring individual, and to sing about love! Merry Christmas.


PatrickPatrick Mayuyu (Ensemble): Patrick has been seen on several local stages including San Diego REP, ion, Diversionary, SDAART and OnStage. CPH credits include: Thoroughly Modern Millie, Avenue Q, Spamalot, Chicago, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 42nd Street, Drowsy Chaperone. Patrick is a proud company member of InnerMission Productions. He is grateful to Jennie and Kirk for this opportunity and to his friends and family for their never ending support.


WillWill Shneider (Ensemble): William loves his Coronado Playhouse family and is happy to be getting an opportunity to play with them again. He particularly enjoys singing – all kinds of songs – and hopes his and his friends’ performances make others want to sing, too! He would like to thank everyone who brings joy into his life. Cheers!!


DanielleDanielle Van Orden (Ensemble): Danielle is a senior at Valhalla High School and has been singing and acting since she was able to talk.  Danielle has performed in many different venues in San Diego including the Civic Center, the Old Globe, Little Italy’s Street Fair, the Lyceum Theater, Moxie Theater, and Coronado Playhouse. She is very excited to be part of this production of Godspell.

Jennie ConnardJennie Gray Connard (Director, Producer, Ensemble): Jennie is so grateful for the opportunity to perform again on the CPH stage. Jennie’s first CPH show was Godspell in 1989 and she is beyond thrilled to get to do it again. She wants to thank Barron, Katy and M.G. for their belief. Extra special thanks to Kirk for asking her to join him and SuperDuper thanks to the amazing cast of magnificent singers. Jennie wishes to acknowledge the wonderful band and thank them for rocking so hard!! Remember; You Are the Light of the World!


Kirk_Valles_06Kirk Valles (Musical Director, Producer): Kirk teaches Vocal/General music in the San Diego Unified School District and is Director of Music at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.  Avenue Q, Spamalot, Sleeping Beauty, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Into The Woods, Pippin, and Little Shop of Horrors are some of Kirk’s latest shows.  Kirk also maintains private piano and voice coaching in the San Diego area.  Kirk is honored to be working with the amazing cast of Godspell and this ROCKIN band.  A very SPECIAL thank you to Jennie our outstanding director and to Barron for the opportunity to work at CPH.  Much LOVE to my babies Ana, Brooke and Jocelyn.

Coronado Playhouse, the oldest, longest-running community theatre in San Diego County, has been dedicated to providing quality entertainment to the Coronado community since 1946. The 100-seat, cabaret-style theatre, overlooks beautiful Glorietta Bay and is part of the beautiful Coronado Community Center. The current venue opened in 2006 with state-of-the-art equipment and a full service bar. We produce five main productions each year - with the best local talent and production teams available - which entertain, educate and enrich our patrons.
