The Story:

Prospero, who possesses magical powers, is the rightful Duke of Milan; he dwells on an enchanted isle with his daughter, Miranda. Twelve years earlier, the duke's brother, Antonio, and Alonso, the King of Naples, conspired to usurp his throne. They set Prospero and Miranda adrift in a boat, and they eventually found themselves marooned on an island. Prospero is served on his island by Ariel, a spirit who he freed from a tree with magic, and Caliban, son of the witch Sycorax.  When magic reveals that a ship bearing his old enemies is sailing near the island, Prospero summons a storm to

wreck their ship. The survivors make it to shore in scattered groups. Among these is Ferdinand, the son of Alonso who is lured to Prospero's abode by the singing of Ariel; there he meets Miranda, and they fall in love.  Meanwhile, Antonio, Alonso, Sebastian, and Gonzalo wander the island in search of Ferdinand. Antonio plots with Sebastian to murder Alonso, but this plot is thwarted by Ariel. Elsewhere on the island, the sailor clowns, Stephano and Trinculo encounter Caliban. After sharing a few drinks, Caliban tries to enlist the two in a plot to kill Prospero. He even promises Miranda to Stephano. Ariel, however, reports all these goings-on to Prospero. Prospero isn't finished with his sport of Antonio and Alonso. He sends Ariel in the guise of a harpy to hound them for their crimes against Prospero. He also sends Ariel to punish Caliban and the clowns as well; Ariel first entices them with some fancy clothes, then sets other island spirits upon them in the shape of animals that chase them around the island. Finally, Prospero confronts his brother and Alonso, revealing his true identity as the rightful Duke of Milan. He demands that Antonio restore his throne; he also rebukes Sebastian (or Sebastiana) for plotting against a sibling.

To Alonso, he reveals Ferdinand alive and well, playing chess with Miranda. As a final act, Prospero abandons his magic and releases Ariel and Caliban from their servitude.

SUDS (Book by Steve Gunderson, Melinda Gilb, and Bryan Scott; Musical Arrangement by Steve Gunderson) takes you back to the early 1960s to tell the story of Cindy, a lovelorn young woman who works in a laundromat, and the guardian angels that teach her how to find true love and survive in this wash, rinse, and spit-em-out world.  SUDS is loaded with good clean fun, bubbling energy, and over 40 songs that topped the charts, including "Mr. Postman," “Where the Boys Are,” “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’,” “Respect,” and “Do You Want to Know a Secret.”

Roles:

3 Women: Cindy, Marge, Dee Dee

1 Man: Mr. Postman/ Washer Repairman/ Mrs. Halo/ Mr. Right/ Milt Dudman/ Johnny Angel

2 Dancer/Singers: Angels

(Please note that all roles are singing roles.)

Cindy: A sweet, personable, possibly gawky girl. Impressionable, and by turns optimistic and depressed, she grows in confidence as the play progresses. She probably wears a ponytail.

Cindy should have a strong alto and a sweet sounding mix. Low F. Belt to B-flat. Easy mix to D.

Marge: A tough cookie. Larger than life, brassy red head with a sharp tongue and a heart of gold. Flashy dresser. Probably in a sexy top, capris and high heels.

Marge should have a strong, controlled pop/rock belt. Tough R&B 'wail'. Plus nice mix for backup. Belt to C#. R&B to F. Nice mix to C.

Dee Dee: Perky and overly enthusiastic, eternal optimist. Fairly manic cross between Sandra Dee and "That Girl". Means well but is liable to wreak havoc at any given time. A big flip hair-do. Typically 60's pointy bra (at one point is referred to as "bullet bra"). Should have a lovely, slightly dressy, very well put-together look (a well dressed Connie Francis).

Strong pop alto with a strong belt. Plus nice mix for back up. Low G to D. Belt or strong mix to E flat.

Male Lead:

·         Mr. Postman: A bouncy, energetic, slightly mysterious postman.

·         Washer Repairman: A big lug. Probably wears work coverall & tool belt, carries toolbox etc.

·         Mrs. Halo: A sweet middle-aged lady with a midwestern accent (she's from Minnesota). She can be dressed in bathrobe, slippers and curlers.

·         Mr. Right:  A dashing, debonair, good-natured man. A cross between Ward Cleaver and a matinee idol. Right out of a Sears Catalogue or an arrow ad come to life. Although very strong and confident, he should not be lecherous or leering; he's very polite to women and very charming.

·         Milt Dudman:   A nerd. Loud, obnoxious, inappropriate and unappealing.

·         Johnny Angel: Earnest young man. Tries to be cool but is really just a regular guy.

Sings sweet solo up to G (can be falsetto). Must belt strong F. Falsetto backups to B flat. Bass to A below middle C. In "Mr. Postman" should be comfortable with a strong pop sound to G flat.

Angels: Two strong dancers who can sing well for backup (see female ranges above).
